I need help on these two problems( substitution method)

-2x+7y=10
x-3y= -3

and

6x-8y= -12
-3x+4y=9

Hi,

I am going to do a similar problem.

Use the substitution method to solve
6x + 3y = 15
2x + 5y = 1

I am going to solve the second equation for x and then substitute into the first equation.

2x + 5y = 1 so 2x = 1 -5y

divide both sides by 2 to get

x = 1/2 -5y/2

now substitute into the first equation

6(1/2 -5y/2) + 3y = 15
3 - 15y + 3y = 15
-12y = 15 - 3 = 12

and thus y = -1. Finally substitute y = -1 into the first equation to get

6x + 3(-1) = 15 so 6x = 15 + 3 = 18 and thus y = 3.

Now try your problems,
Penny
