I need to convert cubic yards to square feet. I have topsoil that is $34.30 a cubic yard and I need to know what the price is in square feet. The depth is 18".

Tyler,

There are 3 feet in a yard so there are 3 x 3 x 3 = 27 cubic feet in a cubic yard. Thus the topsoil costs

$34.30/27 = $1.27 per cubic foot.

Since the depth is 18 inches (1.5 feet) a "block" of soil that is 1 foot by 1 foot on the surface is

1 x 1 x 1.5 = 1.5 cubic feet in volume.

Thus to cover a region to a depth of 18 inches will cost

$1.27 x 1.5 = $1.91 per square foot.
