Hi Amanda. A "mixed" number is a number that has a whole part and a "proper fraction" part. You could also say that it is the sum of a whole number and a fraction: 2 is a whole number, ¼ is a proper fraction and 2¼ (that's 2 + ¼) is a mixed number. To convert a fraction to a mixed number, the numerator (the top) should be larger than the bottom. You divide the bottom into the top and the whole number is how many times it goes in. The remainder is what is left. So for 5/2, you would ask: how many times does 5 go into 7? Answer: twice, with a remainder of 1. So the mixed number form for 5/2 is 2½. Now you try it for 8/3 the same way. Stephen La Rocque. > | ||||||||||||
