Question from Ethel, a parent:

If ann wants to put up a fence for her dog around her 75ft x 55ft retangular yard, the hardware store has fencing materials for 7.50 per yard.  How much would it cost her to purchase fencing material?

Hi Ethel.

It depends on where the house is. Is the house or building next to the 75ft side or the 55ft side? And does it extend all the way along that side?

If we assume that the yard goes all the way around the house without touching the house, then we just add up the sides: 75 + 55 + 75 + 55 = 260 ft perimeter. This is 260/3 yards.

So her cost is (260/3) × $7.50.

Hope this helps,
Stephen La Rocque.
