Question from priya, a student:

Gorang bought 60 Kg of apples at Rs 48 per Kg. He sold 70% of the apples at Rs 60 per Kg and the remaining apples at Rs 35 per Kg.Find Gorang's gain or loss percent on the whole transaction.

Hello Priya.

To solve this, you need to know how much money he spent and how much he received. The difference is the gain or loss, which you can turn into a percentage.

How much Gorang spent:

60 kg of apples × (Rs 48 / kg) = 2880 Rs.

How much Gorang received:

60 kg × 70% × Rs 60 / kg = 2520 Rs.
60 kg × 30% × Rs 35 / kg = 630 Rs.
2520 Rs + 630 Rs = 3150 Rs.

Gain or loss percent:

% gain (loss if negative) = 100 % × (received - spent) / spent.

You can finish this, I'm sure.

Stephen La Rocque.
