One half of a number is subtracted from the sum of one-third and one-quarter of the same number. If the result is 16, find the number.

Hi Samira,

Translate it from words to algebraic equations, then solve the equations.

Here's how I would do it:

"one half of a number": Call the number X, then 1/2 of a number is X/2.
"is subtracted from": means we will subtract X/2 FROM something.
"the sum of one third and one quarter": that's (1/3 + 1/4).
"of the same number": That's X again.
"The result is 16". That means " = 16"

So putting it all together,
(1/3+1/4)X - X/2 = 16.

Can you solve the rest yourself?
