Question from anthony, a student:

solve y=4x and x+y=5

Hi Anthony,

Take the first equation (y = 4x) and substitute the 4x in for y in the second equation (x + y = 5).  You should get x + 4x = 5.  Gather like terms and finish solving for x. When you have x, you can use it to find y.
