Question from megan, a student:

Write an equivalent decimal for 13.48.

Hi Megan,

We have two responses for you. Sue answered the question you sent. Penny thought that you might have meant to ask another question, and sent the solution to a different, more commonly asked question.

That's an odd question Megan.  Most often, we are asked about
equivalent decimals given a fraction or equivalent fractions given a
decimal.

I would say however, that 13.479999999999999... (9 repeating without
end) is equivalent to 13.48.

Reason:
13.47999999...
= 13.47 + .01 x (.999999...)
= 13.47 + .01 x 9 x (.111111...)
= 13.47 + .01 x 9 x (1/9)
= 13.47 + .01 x 1
= 13.48

So these two are equivalent.

Hi Megan,

I think you mean

Write an equivalent fraction for 13.48

I am going to write an equivalent fraction for 1.56
If I multiply 1.56 by 100 then I move the decimal place two places to
the right and get 156. Hence
1.56 = 1.56 x 100/100 = 156/100
Hence 156/100 is an equivalent fraction for 1.56 but I can simplify
this fraction since both the numerator and denominator are divisible
by 2. Thus
156/100 = 78/50.
Can you simplify it further?
Penny
