Question from aimee, a student:

i have the sequence 1,5,14,30,55 and i have been told to use

An squared times Bn times C

and my working should look like this

1 5 14 30 55
  4 9 16 25
    5 7 9
      2 2

But how do i do this

Hi Aimee,

You didn't ask a question so I'm not sure how to respond. The hint(?) "An squared times Bn times C" has me confused. Are you to find the next term? If so then the successive differences you have calculated tells you how to proceed. Since the third difference row is a constant (each value is a 2) you can proceed upwards. The next value in the last row must be a 2 so the next value in the third row must be 11 so that 11 - 9 = 2. Hence the next value in the second row must be 36 so that 36 - 25 = 11. And so on.

1   5   14   30   55
  4   9   16   25   36
    5   7   9   11
      2   2   2

I hope this helps,
Penny
