Question from Amrit, a student:

what 10-3+2

is it 5 or 9

Hi Amrit,

You can evaluate 10 - 3 + 2 by reading right to left

10 - 3 is 7 and then 7 + 2 is 9

or you might do the additions first and then the subtraction

10 + 2 is 12 and then 12 - 3 is 9

or you might even read right to left

-3 + 2 is -1 and 10 -1 is 9.

If you want the minus sign to apply to both the 3 and the 2 you need to explicitly say that in the mathematical expression,

10 - (3 + 2) is 10 - 5 which is 5.

In this form the minus sign applies to the entire quantity 3 + 2.

I hope this helps,
Penny
