Question from Annie, a teacher:

Ok i'm so lost it ain't even funny! HELP! Here's the question: A pie has a radius of 7 inches and can be divided into 8 equal pieces. Determine the number of square inches for one piece of pie. Explain your answer.

Hi Annie,

The area of a circle is π r2 square units where π is approximately 3.1416 and r is the radius of the circle. Your circle has a radius of 7 inches so its area is π r2 = π × 72 square inches. If you cut the pie into 8 equal parts then the area of each part will be one-eighth the area of the whole pie.

I hope this helps,
Penny
