Question from Ashutosh, a student:

A sheet of corrugated iron has corrugations based on the arc of a circle of radius of 3 cm and a central angle of 180 degrees. How many corrugations are formed when a flat sheet of steel 1 metre wide is bent to form a sheet of corrugated iron?

Ashutosh,

Each corrugation is one convex arc and one concave arc. Considered together, this is the same as the circumference as one circle.

What is the circumference of a circle with radius 3 cm?

How many such circles can you make with 1 m of material?

Cheers,
Stephen La Rocque.
