Question from Barbara, a student:

simon arrive to work at 8:15am - and left at 10:30pm if simon gets paid by the hour at a rate of $10.00 and time 1/2 for any hours worked over 8 in a day how much did he get paid?

a.120.25
b. 160.75
c. 173.75
d. 180
e. 182.50

Barbara,

Larry thinks he has a better job than Simon since he makes $12.00 per hour, but he only earns time and a quarter for any hours over 8 in a day. Larry started work at 7:45 am and left at 9:00 pm. How much did Larry earn?

Solution:

Larry started at 7:45 and worked for 8 hours at $12.00 per hour. 7:45 + 8 = 15:45 which is 3:45 pm so in the 8 hours from 7:45 am to 3:45 pm Larry made

8 × $12.00 = $96.00.

From 3:45 pm to 9:00 pm is 5 1/4 hours so in that time Larry made

5.25 × (1.25 × $12.00) = 5.25 × $15.00 = $78.75

Thus in total Larry earned $96.00 + $78.75 = $174.75.

How much did Simon earn?
