Question from Bernie, a student:

Can you please solve one mathematical equation for me which is as follows. 3 squared - (5 + 16 divided by 4 times 2) Thank you

Hi Bernie,

Let me illustrate with a similar problem

(3 × 12/4 + 8) - 23

BEDMAS tell us to evaluare what is inside the brackets first

3 × 12/4 + 8

Again using BEDMAS divide 12 by 4 to get 3 and then 3 × 3 = 9 so

3 × 12/4 + 8 = 3 × 3 + 8 = 9 + 8 = 17

Thus

(3 × 12/4 + 8) - 23 = 17 - 23

23 = 8 and hence

(3 × 12/4 + 8) - 23 = 17 - 23 = 17 - 8 = 9

I hope that helps,
Penny
