Question from Carolyn, a student:

Lumber is measured iin board feet, where a board foot in volume of a piece of lumber one ft sq and one inch thick. How many board feet are in a two by four inch that is 10 feet long?

Carolyn,

One board foot = 12 inches x 12 inches x 1 inch = 144 cubic inches.

A two by four that is 10 feet long is 2 inches x 4 inches x 120 inches = 960 cubic inches.

Does this help?
