Question from chilly, a student:

with x being the subject of the formula, what is the answer of 2 divided by x plus 1 is equal to 3?

Chilly,

I am not sure if you mean

2/(x+1) = 3

or

2/x+1 = 3

I am going to solve a problem similar to the first problem above

4/(x-2)=3

To eliminate the fraction I am going to multiply both sides by x - 2.

4/(x-2)=3

Cancel the factors of x - 2 on the left and multiply 3 through the parentheses on the right to get

4 = 3x - 6

Add 6 to each side

4 + 6 = 3x - 6 + 6

so

10 = 3x

and finally dividing both sides by 3

x = 10/3

I hope this helps,
Penny
