Hi, I'm Darren and i have some questions to ask you about this problem:
In a 5 by 5 checkerboard : how many 2 by 2 squares are there,
what other sizes of squares do you need to count and how many of of each
size of squares
can you find; how many squares did you find in all

Darren,

Try figuring out how many squares of the checkerboard can be the top left corner of a 2x2 square. Since each 2x2 square has exactly one top left corner, and each choice of top left corner completely determines the 2x2 square, this is the number you need.
