Question from David:

I need to lay out a cone that has one side perpendicular to the openings on each end. One opening is 24 inches in diameter, the other is 9 inches, and the straight side is 57 inches

Hi David. I am not sure I have the right idea of the shape you mean. Take a look at the two diagrams I am sending. I started with a double-napped cone, then cut the ends off at right angles, with 57" along one edge. The resulting cuts are ellipses, not circles, with the semi-major axes of 9" and 24".

Is this what you mean? If not, can you send us a diagram or photo of a sketch?
