Question from Denise, a student:

express 1,679,616 in exponential form as a power of 6.

Hi Denise,

First make an intelligent guess.

62 = 36 which is almost 40 so (62)2 = 64 is almost 402 = 1600. Let's square again since I know that 162 = 256.

(64)2 = 68 is almost 16002 = 2,560,000

This is too large but then all our estimates were too large so 1,679,616 is probable 68 or maybe 67.

Now do the calculation exactly. Find 64 = (62)2 = 362 and square the result to get 68.
