Question from jessica, a student:

can you check my answer please thanks

f(x)=2x^2-4x+5

I got 2(x+2)^2-3 for when it asked to simplify it to standard form of a quadratic
equation

Hi Jessica.

The "standard form" of a quadratic equation is y = a (x - h)2 + k, which your answer fits.

Now to see if your answer has the right values:

f(x)=2x2-4x+5

= 2 (x2 - 2x) + 5
= 2 (x2 - 2x + 1) + 5 - 2
= 2 (x - 1)^2 + 3.

Check where you went wrong. Remember to complete the square after factoring out the "a" value.

Cheers,
Stephen La Rocque.
