Question from joanna, a parent:

math question is club made a quilt 16 1/2 square feet 2/3 of the quilt was red how many square feet were red ?

Hi Joanna,

They also made a second quilt that was 15 1/3 square feet and 3/5 of the quilt was blue. Thus

three fifths of fifteen and one third square feet is blue.

Thus the amount which is blue is

3/5 × 15 1/3

To perform this multiplication I first write 15 1/3 as a mixed fraction. 15 is (15 × 3)/3 = 45/3 so

15 1/3 = 15 + 1/3 = 45/3 + 1/3 = 46/3

Thus

3/5 × 15 1/3 = 3/5 × 46/3 = 46/5 = 9 1/5

Hence 9 1/5 square feet of the second of the second quilt is blue.

Can you now find how much of the first quilt is red?

Penny
