Question from joeann, a student:

if a product sold for $40.00 and you got a $10.00 discount what percentage discount do you receive?

Joeann,

A discount expressed as a percentage is a percentage of the original price. Thus you want $10 as a percentage of $40.

$10 as a fraction of $40 is 10/40 = 1/4. Expressed as a percent (per 100 since cent means 100) this is 1/4 × 100 = 25%.
