Question from Julie:

I need a formula to translate linear yards so 36" by 54" to square meters.
So first I need to square the yard and translate it to square meters.

Not a fabulous mathematician!

Julie

We have two responses for you

Hi Julie,

You have the dimensions in inches so lets work in inches. There are 2.54 centimeters in an inch so

36 inches is 36 × 2.54 = 91.44 centimeters which is 0.9144 metres and
54 inches is 54 × 2.54 = 137.16 centimeters which is 1.3716 metres.

Thus you have

0.9144 × 1.3716 = 1.25419 square metres.

Or you can just ask Google. Go to Google and type 36 inches times 54 inches in square metres into the search window and Google will respond (36 inches) times 54 inches = 1.25419104 square meters.

Julie,

Since 1 meter is 39.37", you can skip the yards calculation:

36" x 54"
= (36" x 1m/39.37") x (54" x 1m/39.37")
= (36 x 54) / (39.37 x 39.37) m
= 1.254 m2.

Alternatively, anytime you have a measurement in square yards, you
can convert to square meters, because 1 yard is 0.9144 meters so
1 yard2
= (1 yard)2
= (0.9144 meters)2
= 0.91442 meters2
= 0.8361 m2.

So you'd multiply square yards by 0.8361 to get square meters.

Cheers,
Stephen La Rocque.
