Question from kiki, a student:

I want to know how to this equivalent decimal for 6.0250.

We have two responses for you

Hi Kiki,

Let me illustrate with 3.0765.

3.0765 = 3 + 0/10 + 7/100 + 6/1000 + 5/10000 = 3 + 7/100 + 6/1000 + 5/10000

The tree fractions have a common denominator of 10000 so

3 + 7/100 + 6/1000 + 5/10000
= 3 + 700/10000 + 60/10000 + 5/10000
= 3 + 765/10000
= 30000/10000 + 765/10000
= 30765/10000

This is a fraction which is equivalent to 3.0765 but it's not in lowest terms since the numerator and denominator are both divisible by 5, thus

30765/10000 = 6153/2000

I hope this helps,
Penny

Hi Kiki.

I think you meant that you want the fractional equivalent, since you
gave us a decimal form already.

A fraction is just a whole number divided by another whole number. So
I need to turn 6.0250 into two whole numbers.

One easy way to do this is to just erase the decimal: then I'd have
60250. But to do this, I need to multiply by 10 000. (Moving the
decimal from 6.0250 to 60250. is moving it four decimal places, so
that is the same as multiplying by 1 followed by four zeros). This
means that an equivalent fraction is 60250 / 10000.

Usually, we still want to reduce the fraction to simplest form. This
just means that no number goes into both the top and the bottom. I
can see right away that 250 goes into both, so I can divide the top by
250 and I get 241. I divide the bottom at I get 40. So now I have
the fraction 241 / 40.

Can you simplify this fraction further, or is this the simplest form now?

Cheers,
Stephen La Rocque.
