Question from Lori:

I am a builder and need to find the length of the sides of an octagon. I know the length between the parallel sides (26 feet). What is the length of each side? What is the angle measurement?

Hi Lori,

You can find what you need by searching in the Quandaries and Queries database. Go to the Quandaries and Queries page on Math Central and use the Quick Search to search for the term octagon sides. One of the items returned is titled
The perimeter of a regular octagon. In it Stephen shows that if W is the width of a regular octagon and x the length of a side then x = 0.4142w.

If you return to the Quandaries and Queries page and this time search for octagon angles you will find, among others, an item titled An octagon shaped bed frame. This item will answer your question about angles.
