Question from Marc, a parent:

8 workers dug 3/8 of a tunnel in 10 days. If the need to finish the remaining 5/8 of the tunnel in 3 1/3 days, how many more workers must they hire?

Marc,

I can help get you started.

If 8 workers can dig 3/8 of a tunnel in 10 days then 1 worker can dig one eighth of that amount in 10 days. One eighth of three eighths is 1/8 × 3/8 = 3/64 so

1 worker can dig 3/64 of a tunnel in 10 days

3 1/3 days is one third of 10 so how much of a tunnel can 1 worker dig is 3 1/3 days?

I hope this helps,
Penny
