Question from mary, a student:

Is there any possible relationship between composite functions and the concept of function transformations?

Hi Mary,

When you say function transformations I think of things like

  1. transforming y = f(x) into g1(x) = f(x + 3)

  2. transforming y = f(x) into g2(x) = 3 + f(x)

  3. transforming y = f(x) into g3(x) = 5 × f(x)

and similar transformations. These are compositions.

  1. Let p(x) = x + 3 then f (p(x)) = f(x + 3) = g1(x)

  2. Here p(f(x) = f(x) + 3 = g2(x)

  3. let m(x) = 5 × x then m(f(x)) = 5 × f(x)

I hoe this helps,
Harley
