Question from megan, a student:

How do you express the addition of .9 repeating plus .2 repeating?
Thanks!
M

Hi Megan,

You could try to approximate the sum by expressing the decimals to say 6 places and adding.

0.222222
0.999999
------------
1.222221

From this you can see that if you had expressed the decimals to 7 places the sum would be 1.2222221 and to 8 places 1.22222221 and so on. Hence it looks as if 0.9 repeated plus 0.2 repeated is 1.22222...

This might look strange since 1 plus 0.2 repeated is 1.22222... , but that's because 0.9 repeated is 1.

I hope this helps,
Penny
