Question from Michelle, a student:

Find the equation of a line parallel to y= 1/2x + 5 if the required line passes through ( 3,4)

Hi Michelle,

If the equation of a line is y = mx + b then the slope of the line is m. Thus your given equation y = 1/2 x + 5 represents a line which has slope m = 1/2. Any line parallel to this line also has slope m so the line you are looking for has slope 1/2 and thus its equation is y = 1/2 x + b for some number b. The line passes through (3, 4). Find b.
