Question from Mrs, a parent:

I am having trouble helping my son solve the following equation:

x/3 -5 = 3(x-2)

Hi,

I find the fraction in this problem a nuisance so I would eliminate it by multiplying both sides by 3.

3 × (x/3 - 5) = 3 × 3(x - 2)
3 × x/3 - 3 × 5 = 9(x - 2)
x - 15 = 9x - 18

This is easier to solve.

Make sure you check you answer.
