Question from nas, a parent:

8/9+x=9/5

Hi Nas,

Let me try this one

Solve for x where 7/8 - 2x = 2/3

To solve for x you need to manipulate the equation, always maintaining the equality, and end with an equation x = a number. The first step is to put all the terms involving x on one side of the equation and the remaining terms on the other side. I would do this by subtracting 7/8 from each side

7/8 - 2x = 2/3
7/8 - 2x - 7/8 = 2/3 - 7/8
-2x = 2/3 - 7/8

Simplify the right side by finding a common denominator and subtracting the fractions. A common denominator is 3 × 8 = 24 so

-2x = 2/3 - 7/8 = (2 × 8)/24 - (7 × 3)/24 = (16 - 21)/24 = - 5/24, thus
-2x = -5/24

Multiply both sides by -1 to get 2x = 5/24 and then divide both sides by 2 to finally obtain

x = 5/48

Now can you solve 8/9 + x = 9/5 for x?
