Question from Neil, a parent:

I need help with a question in my 13 year old son's maths test.
I thought I was good at Maths, but I can't get my head round this

Find the next two terms in the following number sequence

1/2, 1/2, 3/8, 1/4, 5/32, 3/32, 7/128

Find a general rule for the nth term of the sequence
Please help

Neil,

The denominators are all powers of 2 but not the powers of 2 in order. If it were the denominators would be 2, 4, 8, 16, 32, 64, 128. Can you write the sequence using equivalent fractions so that the denominators are powers of 2 in order?

Penny
