Question from Qiana, a parent:

I need to know how to change a mixed fraction into a decimal. the mixed fraction is
9 1/2

Hi Qiana,

There are two ways to approach this problem. You can first convert the mixed fraction to an improper fraction and then convert the improper fraction to a decimal fraction or you can convert the fractional part of the mixed fraction to a decimal fraction and then add it to the whole number part of the mixed fraction. That was a complicated sentence so let me illustrate with an example.

Change 7 1/4 to a decimal fraction.

First method.

Convert 7 1/4 to an improper fraction.

7 1/4 = 7 + 1/4 = (7 × 4)/4 + 1/4 = 28/4 + 1/4 = 29/4

Convert the improper fraction to a decimal fraction.

Divide 4 into 29 to get 7.25

Second method.

Convert the fractional part of 7 1/4 to a decimal fraction.

1/4 = 0.25

Add this to the whole number part of the mixed fraction.

7 1/4 = 7 + 1/4 = 7 + 0.25 = 7.25

I hope this helps,
Penny
