Question from Rose:

i used 12 x 19 of carpet. how many sq yards did i use? What is the formula for this?

Hi Rose,

I assume your measurements are in feet.

One square foot of carpet is a 1 x 1 square of carpet. A 12 x 1 strip of carpet is made up of 12 of these, so it covers 12 square feet. A 12 x 19 carpet is made up of 19 strips of size 12 x 1, so its area is 19 times as much, or 12 x 19 square feet.

One yard is three feet, so one square yard is a 3 x 3 square. This means that there are 9 square feet in a square yard.

Now you solve your problem by dividing to obtain the number of square yard sin 12 x 18 square feet.
