Rosemarie,
There are 231 cubic inches in a US gallon. Hence if you have a volume in cubic inches, for example 3675 cubic inches you can convert it to US gallons by dividing be 231. Hence 3675 cubic inches is 3675/231 = 15.9 gallons.
How do you know there are 231 cubic inches in a gallon? If you use it often enough you might remember it. You could look for gallons in a dictionary. You might use an online source like Wikipedia or you could ask Google directly. If you type 1 gallon in cubic inches into the Google search window you receive the response 1 US gallon = 231 cubic inches.
