Question from Sean, a student:

How do I find the roots and describe the roots when graphing a parabola?

y = - x^2 - 4x -3

Sean,

The "roots" are the x-intercepts. As with any x-intercept, we know that y = 0.
So you have:

0 = - x2 - 4x -3

which you can solve for x using factoring or the quadratic formula.

Cheers,
Stephen La Rocque.
