Question from Shafan, a student:

3x^2 = 12

Hi Shafan,

If you divide both sides of the equation by 3 then the resulting quantities are still equal so you have

3x2 = 12
3x2/3 = 12/3

The threes on the left side cancel and hence

x2 = 4

Do you know a number whose square is 4? Do you know another number whose square is 4?

I hope this helps,
Penny
