Question from Sharon, a student:

Please help me with these fractions
1/4, 2/3, ___, 5/6
which fractions should go next
A.1/2
B.1/3
C.3/4
D.11/12

Hi Sharon,

The best way to tackle the problem is by giving all the fractions common denominators so they are comparable. For example, the numbers you are given

1/4, 2/3, ___, 5/6

can be changed to

3/12, 8/12, ___, 10/12.

We can see the number falls between 8/12 and 10/12 so obviously 11/12 would be too large.
