Question from Sylvia, a parent:

1. A artist draws a picture of a house with a rose brush in front. In his picture the rose brush is 1.5 cm high and the house is 7.5 cm high. In reality the rose brush is 0.75 m high. How tall is the house in reality (in meters)? Explain

2. There are six short pieces of link chain. Each having four links. It takes 10 sec to cut a link and 25 sec to weld it back together. What is the shortest possible time to make the longest chain? Explain

Hi Sylvia,

For the first problem you need a scale for the picture, You can see other problems we have received concerning scale diagrams if you go to the Quandaries and Queries page on math Central and type the word scale into the Quick Search window. For your picture 1.5 cm represents 0.75 m so the scale is 0.75:1.5 m:cm which is 1:2 or 1/2 m per cm.

For the second problem how many links do you need to cut in order to form a chain of length 6 × 4 = 24 links?
