Question from Don, a parent:

Hi
We have a 6 team social softball league with only two fields. Each team
plays two games each Saturday. We have three time slots 10:00, 12:00
and 2:00 We play for 11 Saturdays and than have a 2 weekend playoff.
All teams prefer double headers vs the split at 10:00and 2:00. How do we
schedule as balanced a schedule as possible and minmize the splits ?
Thanks
Don

Hi Don,

Here is a schedule. We will leave the playoffs to you.

There are a two splits each day. This is due to the fact that only teams
playing at 12:00 (four teams) can have a double-header, leaving the other
two teams a split. This schedule has each team playing every other team 4
or 5 times, and each team having a split 3 or 4 times. If the teams are
labelled 1,2,3,4,5,6, the schedule is as follows:

Week 1:
10:00 (1,2),(3,6)
12:00 (4,5),(2,3)
2:00 (4,6),(1,5)

Week 2:
10:00 (2,6),(3,5)
12:00 (1,3),(4,6)
2:00 (1,5),(2,4)

Week 3:
10:00 (2,5),(4,6)
12:00 (3,6),(1,2)
2:00 (1,4),(3,5)

Week 4:
10:00 (2,3),(5,6)
12:00 (1,6),(4,5)
2:00 (1,2),(3,4)

Week 5:
10:00 (2,4),(1,3)
12:00 (3,5),(2,6)
2:00 (4,6),(1,5)

Week 6:
10:00 (1,4),(5,6)
12:00 (2,5),(1,3)
2:00 (3,6),(2,4)

Week 7:
10:00 (1,6),(3,4)
12:00 (1,2),(4,5)
2:00 (2,3),(5,6)

Week 8:
10:00 (2,6),(3,5)
12:00 (1,3),(4,6)
2:00 (1,5),(2,4)

Week 9:
10:00 (2,5),(3,4)
12:00 (3,6),(1,5)
2:00 (1,4),(2,6)

Week 10:
10:00 (1,6),(3,4)
12:00 (1,2),(4,5)
2:00 (2,3),(5,6)

Week 11:
10:00 (2,5),(1,6)
12:00 (3,6),(2,4)
