Question from Donna, a student:

How many square feet will 2 cubic yards cover if the depth is 4 inches?

Hi Donna. You are working with yards, feet and inches and need to settle on something common. Let's use feet.

2 cubic yards is the same as 54 cubic feet because 3 ft x 3ft x 3ft is 27 cubic feet or the same as 1 yd x 1 yd x 1 yd. 4 inches is 1/3 of a foot.

So I could equivalently ask how many square feet will 54 cubic feet cover if the depth is 1/3 of a foot?

To answer this, I simply divide: 54 / (1/3) = 162 square feet.

Cheers,
