No. I'm sure some designers have their own favorite rule of thumb but that's their preference.

I once read a woodworking magazine article about the use of the Golden Rectangle in furniture design. The artist's illustrations were way off the theoretical dimensions described - and in some cases they looked much better than the ones described in the captions!
