Question from Josey, a student:

The perimeter of a right triangle is 42 inches. If the lengths of the sides of the triangle are in the ratio 3 to 4 to 5, what are their lengths in inches?

Josey,

3 + 4 + 5 = 12 so if you divide the perimeter into 12 pieces of equal length then the length of the short side is the length of 3 pieces, the length of the middle side is the length of 4 pieces and the length of the long side is the length of 5 pieces.
