Question from kelly, a student:

the product of two consecutive integers is 9 less than the square of the second integer

Hi Kelly,

The two integers are consecutive so if the first integer is n the second integer is n + 1.

  • What is the product of n and n + 1?

  • What is 9 less than the square of n + 1?

These two quantities are equal which gives you an equation you can solve for n.
