Question from Lynnette, a parent:

If I received 100% on my assignment which is worth 20% of my total mark and 87% on my midterm which is worth 40% of my total mark what would I need to get on the final exam which is worth 40% of my mark. To pass the course I must have 80% or above. Thanks.

Lynnette,

The assignment was worth 20% of the final grade so the teacher graded the assignment out of 20 points.
The midterm was worth 40% of the final grade so the teacher graded the midterm out of 40 points.
The final is worth 40% of the final grade so the teacher will grade the final out of 40 points.

You got all of the points on the assignment, that's 100% of 20 points or 20 points.

You got 87% of the marks on the midterm so that's 87% of 40 or 0.87 × 40 = 34.8 points.

Thus, so far you have 20 + 34.8 = 54.8 points. You need 80 - 54.8 = 25.2 more points to pass the course, so you need 25.2 of the 40 points on the final exam. What percentage of 40 is 25.2?
