Question from madison, a student:

6(a+2b)+8a-16b

Madison,

You didn't give any instructions but I expect you are to simplify this expression. I'm going to demonstrate using a different expression.

Simplify 5(2a - b) - 6b + a.

I would first expand 5(2a - b) using the distributive law, that is multiplying 5 times each of the terms inside the parentheses

5(2a - b) - 6b + a
= 5 × 2a + 5 × (-b) - 6b + a
= 10a - 5b - 6b + a

Now collect the "a terms" and the "b terms"

10a - 5b - 6b + a
= 10a + a - 5b - 6b
= 11a - 11b

Now try 6(a + 2b) + 8a - 16b
