Question from marcella, a parent:

a fraction equivalent to 16/20

Hi Marcella,

Equivalent fractions have the same value but may look quite different. For example

1/3 = 2/6 = 5/15 = 10/30.

If you have a fraction and you multiply the numerator and denominator by the same non-zero number then the resulting fraction is equivalent to the original fraction. Thus

1/3 = (1 × 2)/(3 × 2) = 2/6.

Similarly if you have a fraction and you divide the numerator and denominator by the same non-zero number then the resulting fraction is equivalent to the original fraction. Thus

10/30 = (10/2)/(30/2) = 5/15.

In my list of equivalent fractions 1/3 is in the simplest form since there is no common factor in the numerator and denominator. What is the equivalent fraction to 16/20 in simplest form?

Harley
