Hi Mike,
12 × 12 = 144 so you can think of this square as 12 inches by 12 inches. There are 2.54 centimeters in an inch so the square is (12 × 2.54) centimeters by (12 × 2.54) centimeters and hence the ares is
(12 × 2.54) × (12 × 2.54) square centimeters.
Notice that these are square centimeters not centimeters.
