Question from Phillip:

How many square yards will 600 cubic yards of dirt cover, at a depth of 4 inches?

Phillip,

The volume of dirt cover in cubic yards is the surface area in square yards times the depth in yards. There are 36 inches in a yard so the depth is 4/39 = 1/9 yards. Thus

(surface area) × 1/9 = 600

Multiply both sides by 9 to get

surface area = 9 × 600 = 5,400 square yards.
