(12+8)/2x42=

Susan,

These questions drive me bonkers! No one who is interested in mathematics at all would write this.

Since 12 + 8 is inside parentheses you need to evaluate it first to get

20/2x42.

If the goal is to meaningfully transmit information then this would be written (20/2)x42 or 20/(2x42), or (20/2)x42 or 20/(2x42). . Since (20/2)x42 = 10 × 42 = 420 and 20/(2x42). = 0.2381 I would assume they are looking for the response 420.
